The Story of Mahatma Gandhi

圣雄甘地的故事

显示中文译文

Mohandas Gandhi was born in India in 1869. As a boy, he was small, quiet, and shy. He was afraid of the dark, and he was even afraid to talk to other children at school. Nobody looked at this boy and thought, “He will change the world.”

As a young man, Gandhi went to London to study law, and then he went to work in South Africa. One night, he bought a first-class train ticket, but the railway workers threw him off the train. The reason was simple and cruel: he was Indian. That cold night at the station, he made a decision. He would fight unfair treatment — but he would fight without violence.

Gandhi called his idea “satyagraha”, which means “the power of truth”. His weapons were marches, boycotts, and peaceful refusal. When you hit us, he said, we will not hit back. But we will not obey you, either.

In 1930, he did something the whole world watched. Salt was taxed by the British rulers, so even the poorest families had to pay. Gandhi walked 385 kilometers to the sea, picked up a handful of salt from the beach, and broke the law with a smile. Thousands followed him. He was put in prison — and the whole country woke up.

In 1947, India finally became free. Gandhi never held any official position, and he owned almost nothing. He was killed in 1948, but his idea lived on. Later, leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela used the same peaceful power. A shy boy had shown the world that gentle people can be the strongest of all.
