The Man Who Saved the World

拯救了世界的人

显示中文译文

On the night of September 26, 1983, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov was on duty at a secret Soviet early-warning center near Moscow. His job was simple: watch the screens, and if America launched nuclear missiles, report it immediately.

Just after midnight, the sirens screamed. The computer showed one missile launched from the United States. Then a second. Then five. The system rated the alert at the highest level of certainty.

Protocol was clear: report the attack up the chain, and the Soviet Union would almost certainly launch a massive counterstrike before the missiles arrived. The decision now sat in Petrov’s hands, and he had perhaps twenty minutes.

But something felt wrong. Why would America start a war with only five missiles? A real first strike would use hundreds. The ground radar showed nothing. Petrov trusted his gut over the machine and reported the alert as a false alarm.

He was right. Investigators later found that sunlight reflecting off high clouds had fooled the satellite sensors. Petrov was not rewarded — the incident embarrassed the military — and he kept the secret for fifteen years.

Petrov died in 2017, largely unknown. But historians now agree: on that September night, one man’s calm judgment may have prevented a nuclear war. He later said, “I was just doing my job. I was the right person at the right time.”
